マニュアルに従ってスキャンして、マニュアルトークでお支払いや年齢認証をお願いして、キャッシュ システムの処理をして、袋詰めをする。
そんな作業ならば、自分でやった方が早いのではないか?
という理由からか、サンフランシスコの CVS ストアでは一部の店舗でセルフ レジ システムを採用しています。
3台のマシンの前で消費者は自分の欲しい製品のバーコードをスキャナにかざし、あとはカードを切ってレジ袋の有無などをタッチパネルで選択するだけです。
これだけ聞くと、さながら自動販売機のように思われサービスもコミュニケーションもあったものではないと感じる人もいると思います。
ところが、このマシンの後ろには一人の店員さんが立っています。
イメージとしては、銀行の ATM コーナーをイメージしてもらえればわかりやすいかと思います。数台のマシンの後ろにヘルプをしてくれる方がいるのです。
このかたは、お店に入ってこられた方へのお声がけ、セルフ レジ操作のサポート、並んでいるお客様の整理とお声がけなどを行っている。
それらは、「いらっしゃいませ」と「ありがとうございました」をのぞけば、常にお客様の様子を確認した上で声をかけるという、サービスの基本動作を必要としています。
何も考えず、機械的に作業をする事はできません。
自動販売機のようなシステム化、オートメーション化は徹底して人との関わりを排除した効率化システムですが、このセルフ レジシステムにはサービスを提供するという重要な人の仕事が介在しています。
システム化とコミュニケーションの欠如は、必ずしも結びつくものではないようです。

These activities requires the fundamental service method which looks at and propose to the customer. They cannot work as either routine or mechanically.
Making process automatic or systematic tends to be considered decreasing the opportunities of communication as usual. As I illustrated above, however, automation and system makes better communication opportunity sometime by implementing an appropriate process.
