Doyo and Ox day is an eel day in Japan. We attempts to enjoy having eel as a dinner or a lunch. In this year, there are two days of "Doyo and Ox day". I had an eel rice bowl on the 24th of July. On the next "Doyo and Ox day" is the 5th of August.
As of Japanese culture, we had some foods, which is not seasonal, following any old stories. MInazuki, in June, is like as so.
Why did we start having an eel on "Doyo and Ox day"? In fact, there are various stories. However, most famous story is that Gennai Hiraga, who is a scholar in Edo era, suggested to an eel restaurant to set up the advertise in front of the restaurant - "Doyo and Ox day is an eel day". In Edo era, Japanese thought that they were able to keep healthy without suffering a summer heat by having foods which has "う" word. An eel is written in Japanese as "うなぎ".
Actually, an eel has good nutrition, like as Vitamin and Lipid.
By the way, what is Doyo? And What is Ox day? Certainly, Japanese does not use those words as usual recently.
Doyo is based on the five elements perspective. Five elements are Wood, Fire, Metal (stone), Water, also Earth. In this perspective, and, Wood is Spring, Fire is Summer, Metal is Autumn, and Water is Winter. So, what is Earth? Earth is transitioning term. Doyo is Earth. This means that Doyo is a transitioning term.
From this point of view, Doyo is 18 days in advance of the starting date of each season. Of course, "Season" is not match as the actual weather condition. For example, the date of start Autumn is the 8th of August in this year.
On the next, what is Ox day? In Edo era, we are set each animal symbol to each day. Following this method, the 24th of July and 5th of August is an Ox day.
In sum, some of readers feel it weird because the background story is not strictly cleared, and calculation system has not been used in the current society in Japan. However, we are still enjoying this culture. And I would like to keep this culture and turn over to the next generations.
