This story is heard by my friend who stayed at Ritz-Carlton.
They selected Ritz-Carlton for celebrating their memorial day. And Hotel prepared the special room, served great meals, and arranged surprising services. My friends felt them as "THE" Ritz-Carlton.
However, they also felt uncomfortable two things. First is that staffs asked them sometime "May I help you?" or "Is there any problems?". Second is that staffs usually start searching information when asking some sightseeing spots and nearest restaurants and shops. My friends concerns that staffs do not have enough level of ideas for their local area.
When hearing about this story, I have confidence that Service should depends on culture and climate.
If guests likes American or European style services, this service must be perfect. And guests were really satisfied with their services.
They are easy to have communication and to make good relationship with staffs if staffs asks guests about something for helping sometime.
Also, guests appreciate if staffs tries to search and to find solutions for questions, problems, or requests from guests.
In "Japanese" view, on the other hand, guests would like to be got their insight. And Hotel has to be designed without any concerns and problems. The perfect service should keep guests feeling naturally comfortable.
Also, regarding sightseeing queries, guests would like to hear about not only appropriate information and answers, but also their original or additional idea related to those information.
In my previous post, I described about Omotenashi. It is important when serving to Japanese customers, "What we bring" and "What we would like to have". And keep formal, casual, or mixed?
Japanese like to be taken care of those level of services.
When Japanese serve to the other country's guests, whereas, they need to remind what kind of services the other country's guests favorites and feels comfortable.
